The abnormal wear between pantograph slide and contact wire of the electrical locomotive will reduce their service life and increase the maintenance time and cost. A new kind of high-performance sliding electrical contact testing instrument was developed to research the carrying current-wear characteristics of the pantograph slide and contact wire. A 7.5 kW variable frequency motor was used in this instrument to drive a rotary disc of one meter in diameter, some auxiliary devices were fit along the disc to fasten the contact wire. In addition, a 3 kW variable voltage and variable frequency motor was employed to drive a moving bench which was used to fix two slides. The reciprocating motion of the moving bench can simulate the zigzag trace of running line between pantograph slide and contact wire of the electrical locomotive. The contact pressure can be regulated by changing the weight of weight driven. The rotational speed of the rotary disc can be adjusted from 0 r/min to 3000 r/min, and the range of experimental current is from 0 A to 800 A. The laser displacement sensor and the electronic scale were used to measure the wear value of pantograph slide and contact wire precisely by online realtime, a infrared temperature sensor was used to measure the temperature of the contact point, and a torque sensor was employed to measure the friction coefficient. A microcomputer was used to control the testing instrument and also accomplish the functions of data acquisition and display, the supervisory control computer was used to record the experimental data, display, analyze the data curve and so on. The testing instrument has the wonderful features such as the adjustable parameters scope is wide, the measuring accuracy is high, and the function is powerful. It can also be used in electrical contact experiment between the electrical brush and the slipring of motor.
