According to the increase of long time and distance driving, noise reduction in truck cabin becomes a critical problem for comfort improvement. Since a truck installs a high power diesel engine just beneath a floor panel in cabin, noise is more serious than a car. The air borne noise is of great concern especially for the frequency range about 200 to 500 Hz. Therefore an efficient and practical design approach of floor panel is strongly desired to suppress the transmission of emission sound from engine for the frequency range of interest, in the paper, a simple box is used to demonstrate the effectiveness of proposed approach, which has five solid walls except one end open and partitioned with flexible flat plate in the middle assumed as floor panel. The inner cavity space is acoustically excited by a loud speaker in the opposite side of the plate and the contribution of the plate vibration pattern is averaged over the several frequencies and acoustic observation points in the cavity in order to determine the best rib position. Then the ribs on the plate are applied at the proposed best position and an efficient improvement of noise reduction is confirmed for the wide frequency range of interest. An actual truck floor panel in semi anechoic room is then used to find out the best rib position and finally installed into a truck to validate the improvement under engine run up condition.
