Power electronics operating at high temperature level promises cost optimisation for automotive mass production. It can be easily integrated in a hybrid power train sharing the coolant with the combustion engine. But already the definition of non-excessive requirements becomes difficult. Using the example of a mild hybrid system set-up the spectrum of requirements is shown in the paper. The deduction of the mission profile of active load cycles results from a driving cycle representing the operational spectrum and reliability demands. The design and dimensioning of the components like the power module and the controller board bases on these requirements. Experimental tests of components and system are necessary to verify the assumptions and all the steps of simulations at the end. Besides investigations on silicon devices at elevated operating temperature show that using silicon carbide instead promises further benefit for high temperature electronics in future.
