PCI (Premixed Compression Ignition) combustion is a potential breakthrough technique to simultaneously reduce NOx and particulate matter in engine exhaust emissions. A noise survey was conducted to identify the following noise attributes: 1) engine noise level and 2) sound quality of an engine operated under PCI combustion. The results show that PCI combustion is capable of achieving the same or lower noise level than with conventional combustion operated with pilot injection. In addition, PCI combustion was quantitatively evaluated as having better sound quality than conventional combustion because it contains less high-frequency components in engine noise. The study results and discussion for engine noise characteristics with PCI combustion can be summarized as follows. (1) Under the PCI combustion condition being emphasized, smoke reduction, and noise is higher than with conventional combustion using the pilot injection due to a high dP/dThetamax. (2) By increasing the EGR rate, it is possible to achieve an equivalent or lower level of noise with PCI combustion than that achieved by conventional combustion using pilot injection. (3) The engine sound quality with PCI combustion is characterized by fewer high-frequency components. Therefore, if the noise level is equivalent, PCI combustion has better psychoacoustic parameters compared to conventional combustion. (4) PCI combustion can increase the EGR rate and secure a smoke level equivalent or lower than that achieved by conventional combustion. In this case, a decreasing trend for high-frequency components of cylinder pressure can be observed by the prolonged combustion period caused by the increase in the EGR rate.
