TMCP plate steels for line pipe are being actively developed, and the strength and toughness levels reached so far exceed many expectations. Simple alloying concepts were replaced by complex systems involving many components, although rather low levels of carbon. Proper microalloying with Nb, Ti and V is essential. While yield strengths in the range X100 are realized boron-free, the X120 involves boron. The overall progress is reflected by refinements in microstructure; bainite grows in importance relative to ferrite-pearlite. Bainitic structures may be subdivided according to the type of ferrite grains, the second phases and their relative location. The type of morphology is decisive for the properties.
