Textile industry supplies textiles for military forces such as clothing for troops, protection from the elements, transportation parts and accessories, bedding and sleeping gear, and countless other items. Virtually all types of textile products can be found in military use: wovens, knits, nonwovens, even yarn itself as sewing thread, laces and ropes. Sourcing military textiles varies from country to country, but generally falls within two categories. Either the military unit sources by public invitation or the military unit or country has its own department, specialized in sourcing these items. Cotton, polyester, nylon and blends are the most important fibres used, aramid fibres and flame-resistant viscose have become indispensable supplements for special applications. The most important classes of dyes for the military are vat, disperse and metal complex types. Pigment dyes are also used. Reactive and acid dyes are seldom used. Military articles and their requirements generally divide into the following categories: body hugging clothing, outerwear, sportswear, battle dress uniforms and equipment. A huge concern are fire-resistant clothing in an effort to reduce severe burns by IEDs or road side bombs.
