There has been an increased interest in process science related to armor materials. The majority of armor materials once utilized for tactical vehicles were based off of metals. The main advantage of these systems, when compared to a ceramic-based one, is their low production cost. However ceramic-based composite armor systems can provide improved protection at a specific areal density. Ballistic testing and research has indicated certain mechanical properties, mainly hardness and compressive strength, are integral in armor performance. Ceramics, such as alumina, offer these properties and reduced weight versus metal-based armors. Different lots of high density, commercial, armor-grade alumina were tested using high frequency ultrasound in order to determine any correlation between measured properties and ballistic performance. C-scan images were taken using a 15 MHz ultrasonic transducer in order to form attenuation coefficient and elastic property maps. These samples were further characterized by using quantitative analysis. The results indicate that attenuation coefficient values appear to have the strongest correlation, of every property measured, to ballistic classifications.
