The feasibility of using an automatic PPM guided wave system for the intention of detecting flooded sub-sea members of oil rigs, has been designed, implemented and evaluated using oilrig steel structures. Results show that by exploiting the wave-guide effect of steel pipes acting as communication channel, successful transmissions and reception of encoded PPM information has been attained based on the theoretical results yielded by the software Disperse. Although the tests have been conducted in air, the capability of automatically detecting dispersive guided wave energy packets, provided sufficient SNR, has been demonstrated. These results are very encouraging, taking the authors to the next stage of this work, which is to attach permanent smart sensors in a real offshore oilrig for subsequent experiment monitoring.
