There has been a growing concern about the emissions of fire retardants (e.g. polybrominated diphenylethers), phthalates, formaldehyde and VOCs from automotive interior materials which could have an important impact on the in-vehicle air quality (IVAQ) of automotive vehicles. Many leading automobile manufacturers have now introduced their own specification standards for testing and limiting emissions from products produced by their suppliers. In China, a draft standard has been proposed to be implemented in regulation to prevent and control the emissions of potentially harmful pollutants in automobile interiors. This paper provides a review of the standards available for testing emissions from interior automotive components to reduce effects on IVAQ. Samples of headrest and carpet were tested based on the VDA 276 method.
