This contribution outlines, from the tyre industry point of view, opportunities and potential HSE (Health, Safety and Environmental)issues in Nanomateriais, focussing in particular on organoclays. The HSE issues associated to Nanomateriais as a function of their nanoscale derives essentially from the potential of nanoparticles to enter cells: the approach to the different classes of Nanomateriais is discussed, including platy nanomaterials and Nanostructured materials such as Carbon Black and amorphous Silica, the basic fillers in rubber technology since more than a century. Pirelli developments in platy Nanocomposites in rubber compounds are outlined, and discussed in relation to tire performance targets. A mechanism governing intercalation and/or exfoliation in diene rubber is discussed. Morphology of Nanocomposites is described through X-ray Diffraction and Transmission Electron Microscopy analysis. Data are presented on the impact of the Organoclay nanostructural organization on mechanical dynamic properties of cured compounds.
