Modern cars feature an increasingly high number of automatic or intelligent functions tied to vehicle and engine control, passenger safety and comfort. For this reason, the vehicle is equipped with more and more sensors, actuators and microchips which account for a major part of the weight and volume of vehicle components. This is confirmed by the fact that, despite research into new materials (aluminum, plastic and composites) and into the actual structure of the vehicle, a new model usually weights more than the previous. Smart materials may play an important role in the next few years in the development of high power density micro-actuators; shape memory materials are one of the most promising in particular as regards their mechanical characteristics, high level of integration and low cost.
