The forming histories of stamped products, such as the strain hardening and thickness changes used, are dependent on various process parameters including the blank shape. In view of this, it is clear that stamped products using different blank shapes must have different forming histories. This paper is concerned with the effect of blank shape on the crashworthiness of stamped parts, to show an additional advantage to the already well-known advantages of using optimal blanks for realizing material saving and better formability. In order to study the effect of blank shape, a deformation analysis, followed by crash analysis considering the forming history, has been carried out using two kinds of blank shape, namely an optimal blank and another reference blank. For an objective comparison, the results of the deformation analysis were trimmed off to give the part the same contour shape before the crash analysis. Nevertheless, the results provide no firm evidence of increased crashworthiness, so that the effect of blank shape on the resulting crashworthiness properties of stamped parts has been found to be insignificant.
