This paper gives an overview about hybrid systems and shows the development of power electronic converters in detail. Firstly, typical power train and board-net structures for hybrid drive systems are presented. In this context the system efficiency of a typical mild-hybrid concept consisting of a DC/AC converter and an electrical machine is shown. Subsequently, the DC/AC converter is described in greater detail. This DC/AC converter controls all functions and handles the energy flow between the board-net and the electrical machine. A modulation scheme for the DC/AC converters is presented. Most of the losses of the DC/AC converter are produced in the converter power part. The power losses in the semiconductors and the current load in the dc-link capacitors are determined mathematically as a function of the phase shift angle and the modulation factor. Then an electronic control unit (ECU) example for a full-hybrid with a machine output power of 75 kW in motor operation is shown. At last the efficiency characteristics of the DC/AC converter for different hybrid systems are compared to one another.
