The presentation begins with an overview of the history and the current situation of tolling systems in Europe with an emphasis on electronic tolling systems. One focus of the presentation is on technical concepts (DSRC- or GNSS-based systems) and on existing technological trends. Current legislation (e.g. Motorway Tolls Act (Autobahnmautgesetz), PPP Road Construction Act (Fernstraßenbauprivatfinanzierungsgesetz), EU Directive on Interoperability, Tolling Systems Act (Mautsystemgesetz)) and planned new laws (EU Directive on infrastructure costs, Specification of the European Electronic Toll Service (EETS) as well as standardisation (CEN TC 278) are considered. Ongoing activities on European level with regard to achieving interoperability (CESARE, RCI) and current national projects of implementing toll systems are shown. Finally, a perspective of the consequences for tolling in Germany (lorry tolling system, local tolling systems) and in other European countries is given.
