Both the expectations and responsibility of the automotive industry are large against the problems of energy security, global warming and air quality. Already, legislations aimed to reduce CO2 and fuel consumption are coming into force. The world is waiting for a quick introduction of advanced environmental technologies. We have renewed our gasoline engine line-up to meet the environmental demands for fuel flexibility, reduction of CO2, and clean emissions, while increasing the appeal of the automobile; fun to drive and practicality. This renewal started with the GR type engine in 2003 and ended with the NR type in the end of 2008. Also the number of engine types was consolidated from 13 to 7. The new engine series line-up has been developed with maximum priority given to overall energy consumption of the engine; this means not only CO2 emission during use, but also during the manufacturing process. New technologies were developed with a high degree of adaptability and flexibility, so that a speedy worldwide introduction became possible. In order to improve the thermal efficiency, low friction technologies such as roller rocker valvetrain, spiny cylinder liner, and resin coat piston skirt were adopted throughout the line-up. An innovative fuel injection system, called D-4S; was developed for optimal combustion regardless of engine load or speed. These were combined with newly developed valvetrain technologies, Dual VVT-i, VVT-iE, and VALVEMATIC to realize top class fuel economy with low emissions and high performance. With the completion of the new engine series, we have achieved flexible platforms for adoption of advanced technologies such as hybrid or alternative fuels. We will keep focussing on an aggressive introduction of advanced technologies to contribute to our environmental vision, which is to offer sustainable mobility.
