To assist the OEMs to reach the ambitious goals for the reduction of CO2 emissions whilst maintaining end customer comfort and fun-to-drive, the supplier industry needs to understand the functional interactions between different vehicle and power-train components and their related control functions and ultimately the reactions of the vehicle system to different user profiles. To increase the added value of the products and services supplied, Continental teamed up with Lotus Engineering in an integrated approach to gain a better understanding of these interactions in order to develop improved engine design and vehicle system integration support. The different levers for reducing CO2 emissions were analyzed at a vehicle system level. This complete energy analysis started at the tank, progressed through the power-train until reaching the rolling resistance of the tires and took into account electrical loads and driver behaviour. A simulation tool was developed to determine the fuel consumption of different vehicle configurations for the NEDC and other drive cycles. Based on this analysis a downsized engine concept using homogeneous charge direct gasoline injection was defined and realized as a prototype engine and implemented in a compact class demonstrator vehicle. The engine design is shortly presented. The engine concept was combined with a mild hybrid approach to realize stop/start, recuperation and torque assist functionalities. The engine includes an integrated exhaust manifold and is equipped with an under-floor catalyst to prevent enrichment needs for catalyst cooling. Dynamometer results for the engine and chassis dynamometer results for the vehicle are presented in this paper. The demonstrator vehicle passed EURO V emissions successfully. Compared to the series vehicle, the demo vehicle shows an 15% reduction in CO2 emissions with 13% higher power and 37% higher engine torque.
