On July 10, 2003 the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in the United States commissioned the first satellite based augmentation system (SBAS). The system is called the Wide Area Augmentation System (WAAS) and meets SBAS requirements described in Annex 10 to the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Convention. This paper reviews the WAAS systematic and operational enhancements that have occurred over the last couple of years. Additional recent WAAS systematic enhancements include: a) Dual geostationary satellite coverage over the entire continental U.S. (CONUS), and most of North America. b) The geostationary satellites are providing ranging information, resulting in WAAS users having two additional ranging sources over Global Positioning System (GPS) users. c) Change over to improved integrity processing algorithms. d) Performance of all four SBAS service functions listed in Annex 10 Volume I Chapter 3. The FAA completed an extensive system safety study of WAAS in December 2006 which was published in March 2007. This study resulted in beneficial operational enhancements to WAAS. These enhancements were: a) The use of ILS equivalent obstacle clearance surfaces for the development of WAAS localizer performance with vertical guidance (LPV) approach procedures. b) Publication of LPV procedures with decision altitudes (DA's) as low as 60 m height above touchdown with a vertical alert limit (VAL) of 35 m or less, where obstacles and runway infrastructure permit. The paper concludes with the review of current FAA activities intended to expand the operational implementation of WAAS. Of particular interest is the application of WAAS to support helicopter specific operations.
