The guided wave NDT reported in this paper is typical of the best application of the technique in the field. The technique has been developed for screening, and critically has to be followed by local testing at the locations where indications are called. In this case, the application of the screening had to be done in challenging circumstances. The guided wave measurements were planned and executed very thoroughly, using the necessary advanced features of the equipment and procedures. But equally importantly, follow-up testing was performed and recorded rigorously. Where indications were called, new test boxes were installed to investigate in detail. These were costly decisions, based solely and honestly on the interpretation of the guided wave signals. The follow-up included thorough visual mark up of corroded areas, prolific photographic records, and thickness mapping by profilometer and ultrasonic thickness gaging. In cases where other concerns were noted, alternative conventional methods were applied, too: liquid penetrant, magnetic particle and radiographic testing. The results were used to check compliance against integrity calculations and codes of practice, and thus to inform decisions on repair and monitoring. As a result of this follow-up, the records of the testing now include a detailed survey of the line, showing the locations of welds, remaining concrete cover, repairs and anomalies to be monitored.
