Overhead Presentation. There is a need for sustainable mobility driven by global trends such as limited resources, creeping mobility, legislation. Worldwide emission regulations necessitate new power train technologies. The Mercedes-Benz roadmap for sustainable mobility is presented: 1. Optimization of the vehicles with high-tech combustion engines (BlueEfficiency, CGI, BlueTEC, Diesotto); 2. Hybridization for further increase in efficiency (Hybrid, Range Extender, Plug-In); 3. Emission-free driving with fuel-cell/electric vehicles (fuel cell, battery-/E-Drive). Zero-emission vehicles with fuel cell or battery drive are a future target. Already today, Mercedes-Benz has reduced CO2-emnissions compared to 1990 by 30 %. Origins of CO2 in a passenger vehicle are: 46 % engine, 11 % air resistance, 13 % transmission, 12 % roll resistance, 10 % weight, 8 % other (climate, control, electrics, steering etc). A target of the continuous improvement in combustion engines is to get gasoline cars as efficient as diesels and diesel cars as clean as gasoline cars. Further issues discussed in the paper are: Modular hybrid technologies, the potential of hybridization, fuel efficiency of different powertrain concepts, the range of alternative powertrains, challenges for the battery technology, technical data of new generation Smart electric drive, tank-to-wheel efficiencies of different drivetrain concepts. Experiences with Daimler Fuel Cell vehicles are outlined. The development process is described. The progress in fuel cell technology is presented. Challenges for the fuel cell technology given by technology, cost and infrastructure are described.
