The Continental blind spot detection application consists of two radar sensors, one on each side of the subject vehicle. The radar sensors are mounted invisibly behind the edges of the rear bumper. The sensitivity region of the sensor's antennas has to cover the warning zone completely, which is realized by a broad beam antenna. For an early detection of objects overtaking the subject vehicle an antenna with a longer range but smaller width than beam II increases the detection zone towards the backward direction. Beam I is able to measure the range and relative radial speed of all targets moving within the beam using a pulsed FMCW (frequency modulated continuous wave) method. With the 24 GHz radar blind spot detection system Continental has developed a highly reactive lane change assistance system, which warns the driver immediately in case of a relevant vehicle moving within the blind spot zone without being recognized by the driver. The system is active for vehicle speeds above the low activation speed of 9 m/s. Besides other BSD scenarios the system is also capable of handling target vehicles changing from the next but one to the adjacent lane.
