The factors directly influencing the wear of the wheel-rail couple and the R260 rail itself (load, skid, speed) were discussed. The tribological tests on the Amsler stand were carried out on 2 types of the rail steel (with or without thermal treatment). Significant differences in the wear process itself and in the defects formed on the material surface were evidenced. In addition, metallographic tests of the railway rail samples taken from rails used in normal service and samples after a simulated war process were performed. A quantitative metallographic analysis of the wear product morphology was made to determine the intensity of the surface wear and to describe the wear mechanism. The statistical distribution of damage and wear intensity was also determined.
