Typical applications of acoustic emission (AE) method are to monitor AE activity in medium or large structures, such as pressure vessels or piping systems. Satisfactory accuracy of AE source location is usually 100-1000 mm in this type of application. It implies low requirements on AE source location algorithm input parameters (e.g. elastic wave velocity and/or differences of AE signal arrival times between pairs of AE transducers). A structure critical parts monitoring is more difficult problem if the parts are small and accurate AE source location is required. For example, a critical part of aircraft landing gear is shorter than 300 mm, thus requiring a location error ten times smaller. In this paper, problems of AE source location accuracy increasing will be discussed. Method based on the principles of fuzzy set theory will be demonstrated using AE data recorded during fatigue test of a small aircraft landing-gear bracket. These techniques can increase the accuracy of AE source location and consequently critical damage location accuracy.
