High Pressure Common Rail (HPCR) fuel injection systems needed to meet diesel emission regulations operate at pressures in excess of 1800 bar and involve clearances between moving parts on the order of 1 - 5 micron. Protection of the HPCR fuel system on new diesel engines is one of the most demanding contamination control challenges today. Fuel as clean as an ISO Code of 12/9/6 going to the injectors may be needed. The challenge is to provide high removal at small particle sizes under operating conditions. In the field, filters may be challenged with fuel contamination levels in excess of 24/23/19. Filters will see conditions of rapidly changing flow rate, vibration and shock. A diverse range of both contaminants and fuels is present in the marketplace. Filters will be called upon to protect engines from contaminants of varying abrasivity. The introduction of Ultra Low Sulfur Diesels (ULSD) and biodiesels make fuel water separation more difficult. To meet these challenges, contamination control programs that use integrated, optimized filtration systems will be required. New filter test standards, that consider the effects of flow surge and vibration, are needed to enable meaningful comparisons among products. It is anticipated that filter systems with beta ratios on the order of 1,000 at 4 micron(c) may be needed to maintain desired fuel cleanliness levels and filter specifications should include a minimum beta ratio.
