The application of Augmented Reality technology for the support of service and maintenance processes generally relies on the use of mobile devices communicating with a central server via wireless network. The wireless connection is necessary to coordinate several teams during the execution of interlocked, but locally distributed maintenance activities, for requesting and granting clearances for system units as well as for the access to operation data from sensors and databases. Yet, there exist very few experiences with the application of wireless communication networks in sea vessel maintenance and particularly within ship engine rooms. Several test series have been planned and conducted by the Fraunhofer IGD (Institut für graphische Datenverarbeitung) Rostock in order to evaluate the possibilities for the application of WLAN-technology in such environments. The analysis offirst results has shown that the application of WLAN technology for broadband communication within the ship engine room is generallyfeasible. Given an appropriate positioning ofthe access points, a nearly complete coverage ofthe engine room is possible even with reduced transmitterpower. In two series of tests we investigated coverage and connection quality for WLAN connections within ship engine rooms. The analysis of the test results showed that the use of WLAN technology in ship engine rooms is practically feasible. With an appropriate distribution of the access points a nearly complete coverage of the working areas with good connection quality is possible even with reduced transmitting power. The achievable throughput rates allow the streaming of broadband multimedia data. According to first tests, the influence of perturbations resulting from the operation of other onboard equipment is uncritical. The use of WLAN-based location estimation of mobile devices within ship engine rooms yielded only unsatisfactory results. The achievable accuracy only lied within the range of a several metres.
