A version of fractional derivative model characterised by five parameters is presented to describe the dynamic properties of an Hydraulic Engine Mount (HEM). The model is investigated in frequency domain, the physical meaning of the model parameters is defined and constraints on the parameter values are assumed. A modelling method for a Powertrain Mounting System (PMS) is established, where the powertrain is modelled as a rigid body connected to a rigid ground by rubber mounts and/or HEMs, and a mount is simplified as three-dimensional spring and damping elements in its LCS. Formulae for estimating the dynamic displacement of the powertrain CG and the reaction forces of a mount under different loads are presented. An optimisation procedure based on genetic and SQP algorithm is developed for reducing resonance peaks of a powertrain CG and the reaction forces at mounts in a PMS with HEMs. A generic PMS with two rubber mounts and two HEMs are used to validate the optimisation method. Optimisation result of a generic PMS show that resonance peaks of the powertrain displacements and reaction forces at mounts under different loads can be effective reduced with the proposed optimising method. The method developed in this paper can be used for optimising dynamic characteristics of mounts according to the optimisation design criteria of powertrain vibration control.
