Especially the development departments in the Automobile Industry have to face the steadily growing demands on the development efficiency, thus the product quality, development costs and time. A sustainable approach to achieve these goals is the consequent and early integration of virtual development methods like the Digital Mock-Up (DMU) into the vehicle development process. General Motors, respectively the Adam Opel GmbH, pursues this approach by deploying the DMU as a process to visualize geometric product information as well as to perform clearance analyses in the package layout. Due to the steadily expansion of the range of application of the DMU to nondesigning- departments such as Styling, Simulation (Crash, Manufacturing, etc.) and After Sales, the product data is managed in a central database and thereby accessible by all departments of the organization. Designers may configure and load any arbitrary designing environment directly out of this database. Because of the growing amount of variants within the vehicle platforms, it becomes more and more important to assign single part oriented 3D data to different, so called Tracking Vehicles, to preserve the overview to the non-designing departments. These Tracking Vehicles can then be selected directly in the Teamcenter Database and subsequently visualized in TcVisual Mock-Up. The reduced data content which is used in TcVisual Mock-Up furthermore allows the user, by simultaneously loading whole vehicle assemblies, to use TcVisual Mock- Up also for concept and package layout. Thereby it can be analyzed whether e.g. a predefined minimum distance of the engine to its surrounding parts has been adhered. A special interest hereby lies in the distances that result from the relative movement of the components under operating conditions. For this purpose the method of the Dynamic DMU has been developed at GME. Here, externally simulated, but also measured motion data, for example from engine motion measurements, are applied to the 3D data. Thereby, the package layout can be done dynamically, that is considering the relative motion of the individual parts to each other. These results are reported back to the affected departments and can even be taken into consideration in the concept phase.
