Especially, in multi-discipiinary and multi-site engineering structures which have been established for the development and building of ships there is a need for accessing all of the available product related content within every single process step. This paper gives an overview on a general reference product data model as well as of one specific product data model for shipbuilding industry as a basis for the location and exchange of product data. the developed general product data model helps cooperating enterprises to systematically categorise the complex structures of data describing a complex product which are handled during its life cycle. The model is of high relevance for realising information technological solutions as well as improving the concurrent engineering information and communication structures. The relevance of the models and schemes presented in this paper is founded by the fact that more and more projects for conception, designing and building complex products are carried out through multi-disciplinary and multi-site structures to cope with the strong international competition. To make the cooperation of enterprises or units working together in these structures work there is a need for exchanging data between them. As a basis for the data exchange, suitable attributes for identifying the product's component parts and a common structure for handling the exchanged product data has been found. Further more, a practical general product data model of complex products has been developed. The significance of the results described in this paper mainly lies in a strong reduction of product development time, because the described models support a quick and easy finding of content needed in a specific product development process step. This results from the strong structure the models give as well as from the fact that these models prepare an electronic representation of the product structure which allows the already mentioned quick an easy finding of specific content.
