In recent years, there has been much development related to rear obstacle warning systems that use image processing. In addition, more blind spot monitoring systems are adopting rear monitor cameras used for assisting the driver while reversing. If such a monitor camera can also be used to recognize approaching vehicles, then it will be possible to realize a rear obstacle warning system at low cost. This will promote the spread of such systems, contributing to a reduction in traffic accidents. However, since this type of camera adopts a wide-angle lens in order to observe a wide near range during parking, it is difficult to recognize approaching obstacles with high accuracy due to the large distortion, low image resolution, and large downward tilt angle of the camera. For these reasons, various countermeasures have been applied, such as image normalization, grouping of motion vectors using their geometric invariants, and detection objects. Various recognition algorithms were evaluated and some of them were selected as fundamental algorithms. Furthermore, algorithms that can reserve specific concern of this system were developed. As a result, robust recognition performance under various environments has been obtained.
