The technical possibilities of an engine system (combustion and exhaust aftertreatment) which made good use of the properties of FTD (Fischer-Tropsch Diesel) fuel (zero sulfur, zero aroma and a high cetane number) were examined. Cleaner diesel operation with considerably lower exhaust emissions than current levels was achieved by making a small change to the combustion and exhaust aftertreatment system. For the research, a commercial 2L class small diesel engine was used, and this experimental mechanism was described in detail. In this study, research on the combustion characteristics of FTD fuels were performed. And based on the research, the key criteria for modification of an engine and improvement of the exhaust aftertreatment system were demonstrated. The main conclusions are as follows: During the combustion of FTD fuel, it is found the ignition delay is short, but the end time of combustion is the same as regular diesel fuel. FTD fuel has a high cetane number, but it does not include polycyclic aromatics; therefore, the amount of smoke emissions is low. The HC emissions of FTD fuel are small and the combustion noise is also low. To make use of the above properties, the following key criteria for engine modification are established: a low compression ratio, an increase of EGR, a retard of injection timing, a high injection pressure and the optimization of a small quantity of pilot injection fuel. The above modifications were applied to a diesel passenger car for the European market. And as a result, potentially favorable results can be obtained, with less than half of the expected value of post new long-term regulations (Japan).
