This paper gives an overview about the use of fuel cell in automotive applications and the planning of a test bench for the simulation of a vehicle with fuels cells as auxiliary power unit for the in-vehicle network and as power unit for the drive engine. Simulation results show that energy storages should be used, in particular, for increasing loads. By using the fuel cell system in the optimal area, energy saving can be realized, through the higher efficiency beside a better durability by avoiding critical states, because the dynamic behavior of the system will be reduced by the charging and discharging of the energy storage. The energy management of the system is very important for the efficiency and durability of the components. Additionally, the waste heat of the fuel cell stack can be used for the preheating of the combustion engine. By this, the combustion engine can work more efficiently, the emissions and the fuel consumption decrease and the durability of the engine can be increased.
