To develop a high heat-resistant stainless steel for automotive exhaust manifolds, the influence of alloying elements on high temperature strength and oxidation resistance of 15%Cr-1.6%Mo-Nb ferritic stainless steel were investigated. Effects of Nb and Mo on high temperature strength were likely to be saturated above 0.5% and 1.5% respectively. High temperature strength and oxidation resistance were increased by not only optimizing additional contents hut also addition of 3% W. Manganese was effective in improving adhesion property of scale at elevated temperature. Based on these findings, JFE-WX1, 15%Cr-3%W-1.8%Mo-0.5%Nb-1%Mn steel, has been developed. The newly developed steel has the same thermal fatigue property, fatigue strength at elevated temperature and oxidation property as those of 15%Cr-1.6%Mo-Nb steel, even if it goes up by 50 deg C.
