Hydrostatic drive lines are implemented in different kinds of off-highway machines due to their advantageous characteristics, e.g. continuously variable transmission ratio, high power density, flexible design and good controllability. Furthermore, the development of hydrostatic-mechanical power split transmissions combines the continuously variable transmission ratio of hydrostatic drives with the high efficiency of mechanical transmissions. Today hydrostatic-mechanical power split transmissions are state-of-the-art in drivelines of tractors in the upper and middle engine-power range. For their implementation in new applications, e.g. wheel loaders, power split transmissions have to be adapted to the machine, the most frequent load cycles and the implemented diesel engine. This adjustment is fundamental to benefit from the well known advantages stated above. The effort for the design of a novel drive line concept is necessary because of the complex physical interrelationships of the mechanical and the hydrostatic transmission elements of power split transmissions. Additionally, the load on drive line and working hydraulic of the investigated machine needs to be defined. Within the collaborative research project Investigation and further development of drive line concepts for offhighway machines a verified software tool has been designed. It allows the investigation of various partly or fully hydrostatic transmissions on basis of their energy efficiency. This paper introduces the extent of information which can be derived from the simulation results for wheel loader drive lines (including the diesel engine). By means of these results drive line concepts can be evaluated prior to the first real prototype. Based on a power split transmission for tractor applications two further developed transmissions for 120 kW wheel loader application were designed. Typical load cycles were simulated including three different control concepts. Within the simulations the fuel consumption of the diesel engine as well as the losses at gears and hydrostatic units were regarded.
