The BMW Group aims with the concept of EfficientDynamics to rise the standard for a higher fuel efficiency and driving performance. As a part of this strategy BMW integrates hybrid components into vehicle powertrains. As a consequent extension and not as a replacement of existing technologies this takes place with vehicle specific characteristics. Hybrid systems range from the automatic start stop function and dynamic energy management in the 12 V electrical system over graded mild-hybrid variants up to full-hybridization with high electrical motor power und high voltage battery systems. Whereas the vehicle components of the various concepts are completely different, simulation environments and Hardware-in-the- Loop (HiL) test systems for the various control units can be set up in a very similar way. The usage of HiL systems is a mandatory element of the BMW development process. With increasing availability of simulation-capable controller models, the process chain is integrated up to the Model-in-the-Loop (MiL) simulation. The HiL simulation models from the right V-branch of the development cycle rise inside the left, conceptual V-branch. The hybrid powertrain is speeding up this development. HiL systems for a subset of the controller network are requiring a detailed behavior simulation of other components. These simulation models can be used for hardware-independent MiL simulation as well. The integrated BMW real time HiL model platform has been used for several years at BMW and its controller manufacturers, with an objective of an efficient setup of similar test systems at BMW and its suppliers. With increasing importance of controllers being developed in co-operations but closely linked with the other vehicle systems, especially at the beginning of a project, the controller network HiL systems have become the focus setup environment for new vehicle controllers: Up to the complete controller network of all powertrain, hybrid and chassis controllers, the various functions can be put in operation, precalibrated and tested.
