Today, already several Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEVs) are available in the automotive market. Especially vehicles following the power split concept are well known. As the amount of electric consumers in today's cars steadily increases, the management of the electric energy becomes more and more important for the vehicle reliability and its customer acceptance. In HEV concepts the energy management is a key factor for securing low fuel consumption and thereby contributing to the reduction of the CO2 emissions. Continental is developing intelligent driving strategies for HEVs in order to reach the ambitious emission limits set for the future. The Traction Energy Management (TREM) is a major part of this driving strategy. This paper describes the latest development activities at Continental. In order to optimize the Energy Management in an HEV, the data from the navigation system can be used to improve the driving strategy. For example, it might be useful to discharge the battery before a long distance downhill driving for the purpose of regaining a larger quantity of energy through regenerative braking. In order to identify such potentials Continental performed driving tests on the road and developed suitable functionalities to adapt the driving strategy online in the vehicle. Methods for calculation of dedicated energy portions for certain functions and for determining an SOC (State of Charge) estimate for the next 5 to 15 minutes will be introduced. First results will be shown. Further, an overview about future activities will be given.
