Various OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturers), suppliers and research facilities have previously published electromechanical power-split hybrid transmission concepts. However no comprehensive, systematic approach to transmission synthesis has been demonstrated from which these innovative transmission concepts emerged. This article demonstrates a comprehensive, systematic conceptualisation method, by means of which the most suitable power-split transmission concept can be determined depending on development goals. For this, the potential variety of concepts and spectrum to be looked at are presented. First, the clarification of requirements and constraints and the criteria for evaluation for the development of a structured target system are presented. The reduction of the power-split transmission to three basic structures enables a system for transmission synthesis to be constructed. The characteristics of the basic structures are shown via the ratio-dependent power flow share supplied through the electrical path. This results in a motivation to develop a range-change transmission, for which promising dual range combinations are stated. Using the example of a simple power-split concept with input-side differential (input split) and double power split (compound split), it was shown how all implementation possibilities can be found using just two differentials and switching elements. Next, the analysis and evaluation were briefly introduced and a method suggested for the latter which combines the advantages of the Value Benefit Cost Analysis (VBCA), the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) and the Quality Function Deployment (QFD) approach. Finally, the transmission structures found were made more concrete using the example of the planetary coupling gear, which was systematically derived from requirements for its kinematic and kinetic characteristics. The conceptualisation method demonstrated is the topic of a dissertation written within the Volkswagen Group Research Division, in which further details concerning the aforementioned points can be found.
