Modern fuselage structures are built using welding technology, especially in regions exposed to axial compression loads. These kinds of structures are under numerical investigation at the Institute of Aircraft Design and Lightweight Structures (IFL) as a part of the IMER Project within the LuFo III program sponsored by the German Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology. Based on the results developed during this project, two approaches to asses the buckling behaviour of fuselage parts are applied to a generic fuselage structure within this paper. Firstly the results of selected handbook methods are presented to estimate fundamental structural data like buckling load, crippling load and maximum load. Secondly Finite Element (FE) models are presented in order to calculate the structural buckling behaviour numerically. The results of both approaches are compared to get information about the applicability of handbook methods for this type of structures.
