Short notice given only substantially as follows: The requirements for modern aero engines are rising continuously concerning component quality, integrity, and costs. In order to achieve a best compromise of weight, strength and corrosion resistance compressor parts of modern aero-engines are mainly made from titanium alloys. Ti-6Al-4V is being one of the most popular alloys used in the temperature range below 300 deg C. During operation aero-engine components are exposed to high temperatures and cyclic stresses. Under fatigue load crack initiation and crack growth of surface cracks are one of the life dominant factors. Therefore, adequate surface finishing methods are applied to enhance the fatigue life of major rotating components as disks, blades and integral bladed rotors (BLISKS). Conventional shot peening is a major serial process used for years in the aero-engine industry. In modern aero-engines compressors BLISKS were developed to reduce the component weight and improve efficiency. These components have been further optimized with respect to weight resulting in thinner geometries in the web area of the disk. Consequently, precautions have to be taken into account to avoid stress induced distortion of the components in such thin areas during the peening process. MTU has implemented Ultrasonic Shot Peening (US-peening) as an alternative to the conventional shot peening process. For safety reasons detailed knowledge about the effect of this process on the component material properties especially the fatigue behavior is inevitable. For this reason an extensive test program was performed to investigate the effect of Ultrasonic Shot Peening on the surface topography, microstructure, residual stress, dislocation density and the associated fatigue properties compared to conventional shot peening.
