The BMW Group carried out a large-scale trial with 501 prototypes in 2007 in order to obtain detailed information about the 'whole recycling process' of BMW and MINI vehicles regarding compliance with legal requirements. These requirements arise from the EU Directive on end-of-life vehicles (ELV) and from the EU Directive on the type-approval of motor vehicles with regard to their reusability, recyclability and recoverability. The results have shown that the BMW Group complies with the legal requirements regarding all obligations for the vehicle recycling. Components for reuse were exclusively dismantled in a market-oriented manner. The metal contents were nearly totally separated immediately after processing or after further treatment of composites into recyclable metal products. The resulting high-heating-value products were used for energy recovery. Processed plastic fractions were used successfully as secondary raw material for material and feedstock recycling. The high amount of reusable and economically recyclable and recoverable material fraction shows the important role of vehicles as a source for raw materials and energy. The decision for which materials to use should be based on market forces alone. There is still some potential for further processing of the resulting disposal products from the trial. Therefore, in future, cost-optimized technologies have to be developed. This requires, also from politicians and legislators, a more flexible waste management that allows eco-efficient recycling and recovery of the materials produced. Processes and technologies are necessary as used by the companies Scholz Recycling GmbH and Galloo Plastics S.A. that represent the current state-of-the-art. For an EU-wide compliance with legal requirements, the officially recognized recycling routes which were used within the trial are necessary in all EU member states.
