An innovative measurement system that was developed for real time dynamic wheel forces measurement in a two-wheeler has been presented in detail. An idea to improve the measurements system to measure braking forces and moments has also been presented. An integrated static validation and quick-check calibration fixture was also developed to ensure correctness of the readings. Dynamic validation of the measurements was also done using a two-poster rig and the results presented. The measurement system was used to gather wheel force data for different road profiles and the findings were presented. Since the forces were recorded directly, it would be very valuable for carrying out finite element analysis of critical components of the vehicle for current products as well as for upcoming products during the initial stages of product development. The simple architecture of the measurement system proved to be highly cost effective and very flexible to be used on different vehicles as well as other applications. Some of the applications can be measurement of tyre force characteristics, on-road load data acquisition for lab-simulation and virtual testing using multibody simulation softwares, measurement of impact forces during a crash and carry out non-linear analysis and so on.
