Road safety is one of the key issues in vehicle systems technology. Aiming at a reduction of the number of accidents, it is noticeable that more than 86 % of all accidents are caused by human failures. Inattention and excessive demands might be among the reasons for this high rate. Here, modern Driver Assistance Systems (DAS) such as the Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) or Lane Keeping Assistants (LKA) try to support the driver on the guidance level. This development is enabled by the rapid progress of environmental sensor technologies providing information about the traffic space such as the course of the road and about other traffic participants. This paper addresses the question how potential field methods, well known from robotics, can contribute to provide guidance strategies including applications such as in lane-keeping, in lane-changing and in collision avoidance. Discussions about the sensor technology and the appropriate design of the Human Machine Interface (HMI) are beyond the scope of this contribution. In the following, a brief overview of potential field methods and the automotive applications is given. Subsequently, a potential field concept including motion planning and vehicle guidance for automotive application is proposed.
