A non-destructive technique for monitoring of the stress free temperature in rails is proposed. The underlying principle is the stress dependency of Rayleigh wave polarization. The results of the numerical simulation demonstrate that the acoustoelastic effect of Rayleigh wave speed is most sensitive among the ultrasonic waves investigated. An experimental setup for measuring the polarization of Rayleigh wave is shown. The experimental setup uses a non-contact laser vibrometer to detect the Rayleigh wave. In future the rail specimen has to be stressed in a material testing machine and a measurement of the polarization of Rayleigh wave under zero stress and under stressed conditions have to be performed. These results then have to be verified with the theoretical predictions. In order to implement the proposed technique in the field, it will be necessary to evaluate the dependency of stress measurement on rail texture and variations in microstructure such as grain size or alloy content. For this purpose it is recommended to carry out a texture characterization for the rail sample and relate it to the stress measurement results.
