This paper deals with a drive based on a cage interior permanent magnets synchronous motor. It is an IPMSM with a copper damping cage in order to make it suitable for high speed operation while keeping a simple open-loop V/f control for reducing the costs of the controller. A prototype was built and tested. The design and analysis aspects are presented and discussed in the paper. The prototype was then included in a test rig and controlled with the proposed open-loop algorithm. The control structure is presented, the measurement results are illustrated and discussed.
