Increasing market penetration of driver assistance systems challenges system suppliers with ACC (Adaptive Cruise Control) and PSS (Predictive Safety Systems) functions with divergent requirements. This paper covers the technical development of a long range radar sensor that can address the requirements for high performance systems as well as requirements for costefficient sensor components with robust and compact design and high quality standards, which are suited for high-volume production. This paper discusses a FMCW modulated radar in the 76 - 77 GHz frequency range. Its advanced antenna design enables a field of view that covers the range of 0.5 to 250 m with a Field of View of 30. A customized FoV of up to 45 can be adjusted by modification of the focusing element. Its measurement performance with best-in-class accuracy of angle, velocity and distance allows the detection of even stationary objects. By the introduction of SiGe-MMICs, highly integrated ASICs, standardized manufacturing processes and efficient signal processing algorithms, an extremely cost efficient sensor ready for high volume production has been developed. Key-element of our sensor concept is the Introduction of a fully silicon based technology for the RF-components with excellent properties due to performance, quality and cost. This paper presents the sensor architecture and performance, technical data and used technologies. Mechanical and electrical sensor interfaces are described. An integrated lens and radome heating guarantees the availability of full sensor performance under harsh weather conditions (snow and ice).
