This paper provides an introduction to River Information Services (RIS) and the needs with respect to positioning performance. Based on these requirements the suitability for EGNOS and Galileo and different hybrid solutions have been analysed. The outcome of this analysis was that current systems do not provide the required accuracy and more important integrity. EGNOS and Galileo are ought to overcome these deficiencies and an upgrade to the systems is recommended. This upgrade should however happen in a cost efficient way and consider the financial restrictions and previous investments of the users. The outcomes of this process were recommendations towards service providers for the infrastructure upgrade and towards ship owners for the vessel-side upgrade.
