Advanced high-strength steels (AHSS) contribute significantly to the weight reduction concepts of car manufacturers. These AHSS have to be zinc-coated by means of electro- or hot-dip galvanizing for corrosion protection purposes. This paper describes the present situation in Europe, where pure zinc coatings are mainly used, especially for car body applications and structural parts. Some OEMs, for example transplants, use zinc/iron (galvannealed)coatings as an alternative. The coating weights differ, depending on the part concerned. In general there is a tendency to reduce the coating weight, yet to keep the corrosion resistance as high as possible. This means having to improve the corrosion protection properties of the coating it self. One approach is zinc-magnesium alloy coating. Different systems are possible, and application techniques are under development. Systems based on electrozinc and Mg vapor deposition, as well as hot-dip zinc-magnesium alloy coatings, are mean while known.
