White LED light sources for use in automotive forward lighting will be discussed in this paper. Technical challenges have been addressed, resulting in the development of a dedicated source for road illumination applications. Improvements have been made in flux, luminance, and robustness to ensure reliable performance under stringent environmental conditions while delivering unique styling capabilities and new lamp functionality. Revolutionary improvements in white color point control will deliver color consistency requirements both at initial installation and over the life of the vehicle. Due to these significant engineering advancements that have made white LEDs feasible for use in automotive road illumination applications, initial production programs are announced and broader market adoption is expected before the end of the decade. Among the developments that have enabled the implementation of this technology in a production environment are: 1) efficiency and luminance enhancement; 2) LED source size; clarity and definition; 3) high ambient temperature capability and stability; and 4) white LED color consistency. This paper will highlight efforts to produce white LEDs aimed at improving performance and enabling significant market adoption Specific topics include: 1) developments in the fabrication of high-luminance sources; 2) improved phosphor systems and resulting color control; and 3) design and packaging considerations for high-temperature environments. Packaging has been developed to enable adoption of this technology in production lamp designs, and commercially available versions of this technology will become available in 2008. Further developments in LED technology will enable future sources that can deliver HID equivalence on the road, under realistic use conditions, with as few as 4 sources by 2010.
