A new methodology has been developed for evaluating 'Behavioural Conspicuity', based on objectively measured differences in behaviour due to various Powered Two Wheeler (PTW) frontal lighting treatments. It measures drivers' eye fixations (i.e., 'detection'), 'Go' decisions and the minimum distance between vehicles, in naturalistic urban and rural driving in a driving simulator. These are measured during full task 'blind' experiments. Vehicle lighting treatments are simulated by maintaining the proper luminance contrast ratio and beam patterns, in daytime and dusk conditions. Drivers navigate a road circuit, in mixed traffic, that includes several real PTW accident sites. The probabilities of opposing vehicle detection, 'Go' through each intersection and collision with opposing vehicles are calculated. The Behavioural Conspicuity methodology was photometrically calibrated against real lighting treatments, validated using 'glimpse' detection tests, and correlated against traditional full-scale, non-blind, subjective detection experiments. Test results with groups of n=12 subjects showed similar detection rates between the Simulator and the full-scale environments, that Behavioural Conspicuity measurements can produce different trends than typical non-blind detection tests, and that various lighting treatments can result in similar detection probabilities but statistically significant differences in driver 'Go' decisions and/or collision probabilities. Overall, the Behavioural Conspicuity methodology was found to provide a powerful tool for researching differences in driver behaviour and collision probability due to lighting treatments in a sample of real accident scenarios.
