During the past 20 years, enormous progress has been made in chassis engineering and drivability. Today's vehicles are significantly safer and at the same time more comfortable than their predecessors. Among the reasons are a variety of electronic control systems on offer today, but also the fact that engineers have succeeded in making suspension and chassis design and tuning more precise and significant by using modern analysis and simulation methods. This allows product maturity to be assured and intensified even in earlier development stages, despite wider model ranges and shorter development times. Aspects of the vehicle dynamics like handling, ride, comfort, and durability as well as of controlled subsystems are discussed. In this context, the significance of modeling and simulation of the tire behavior becomes increasingly important. The role of the tire and the corresponding tire models is highlighted and requirements for the modelling and parametrization of tire models are derived. Without sufficient tire model accuracy under all operating conditions to be analyzed, the simulation results will fail to be as reliable as we need them to be for our development decisions.
