For measurement of very low diesel exhaust PM emissions, the filter gravimetric method may no longer be sufficiently accurate due to evaporation of filtered particles from or adsorption of condesable gases onto the filter media. For more accurate determination of the low emissions, we have been developing a technique based on the DMA and APM method which is expected to have less impacts by the particle evaporation and gas adsorption. As part of the above effort, the effective density of diesel exhaust particles and the fractal dimension are measured. The results show that the effective density of diesel exhaust particles by this method is 1.1~1.2 g/cm3 at 60nm and the fractal dimension of its agglomeration is about 2.5.
