The dynamic design of railway vehicles is often supported by numerical simulation performed by means of Multibody codes. Such methodology allows to define vehicle suspensions characteristics so as to meet running safety requirements and, in the case of passenger vehicles, to achieve an adequate comfort level. However, the effectiveness of the numerical model in the prediction of actual vehicle behavior may fall short of requirements if the model is not sufficiently accurate. Experimental validation can help to ensure reliability of the numerical models. In order to solve the problem, this work proposes to use experimental tests on scaled prototypes on roller-rig for preliminary validation of the numerical model. This methodology was applied during the design phase of an actual vehicle, providing a useful tool to verify the design, the actual vehicle being not yet available. The entire design activity, the construction of the scaled prototype and related testing were completed in a period of one year and carried on contextually with the design of the actual vehicle without increasing design timeline. Numerical results are in good agreement with experimental results obtained on the roller rig and permitted tuning of the dynamic model of the vehicle before testing the actual vehicle on line. In detail, bogie suspensions were optimized to maximize performance in terms of both stability and running safety, and in terms of passenger comfort. Obviously, since this methodology is highly innovative, after construction of the actual vehicle, data obtained from tests on line will be compared again with those yielded by the roller rig. In this way it will be possible to evaluate with higher accuracy the effectiveness of the method proposed in this work.
